In alignment with its mission to protect the United States, DHS ensures that its operations comply with key environmental laws designed to preserve natural habitats and wildlife, including, but not limited to:
- Endangered Species Act (ESA)
- Coastal Zone Management Act (CZMA)
- Migratory Bird Treaty Act (MBTA)
- Clean Water Act (CWA)

DHS, as required by Executive Order 13186, Responsibilities of Federal Agencies to Protect Migratory Birds, is committed to developing and maintaining partnerships with federal, state, local, and territorial entities, and Tribal Nations, in the management of natural resources. One such partnership is with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service through memoranda of understanding for migratory bird conservation.
