FPS Operations

The Federal Protective Service (FPS) ensures safe and secure working environments for federal workers and visitors in approximately 8,500 federal facilities nationwide. These services include: conducting facility security assessments; responding to crimes and other incidents to protect life and property; and detecting, investigating, and mitigating threats. This page provides a snapshot of how FPS carries out its mission to protect federal buildings, federal employees and contractors, and visitors to federal facilities.

 

  • Provide integrated security and law enforcement services to more than 8,500 federal facilities nationwide
  • More than 1,300 Law Enforcement Officers, Security Specialists, Special Agents and Mission Support Staff protecting federal facilities and tenants
  • Oversight of more than 13,000 contract Protective Security Officers
  • Securing Federal Facilities in all 50 states and U.S. territories
  • Nationwide 24-hour operational communications capabilities, between the field and FPS’s three MegaCenters

  • 337,278 total prohibited items prevented from entering federal facilities
    • This includes the following categories:
    • 2,730 firearms
    • 249,972 other weapons
    • 21,242 flammable items
    • 59,089 chemicals
    • 3,990 narcotics
    • 255 suspicious packages
  • 2,157 total arrests, detentions, and citations
    • 274 arrests
    • 247 detentions
    • 818 citations
    • 48 criminal charges (Title 18, U.S. Code)
    • 769 U.S. District Court Notice of Violations (Title 41, Code of Federal Regulations)
    • 1 State and Municipal penal code violations
  • 38,663 canine sweeps
    • This includes 30,452 building sweeps and 8,211 vehicle sweeps. Sometimes multiple vehicles are swept, for 78,551 total vehicles.
  • 905 Investigative Program contributions
    • 415 total investigations, including threats against federal employees
    • 323 threat investigations
    • 115 prosecution referrals
    • 40 arrests confirmed
    • 9 convictions attained
    • 3 dismissals
  • 97 Counter-Unmanned Aircraft Systems (C-UAS) incidents occurred at federal protected facilities
