This week, the Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem will travel to El Salvador, Colombia, and Mexico.
In her first month on the job, Secretary Kristi Noem returned the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to its core mission of securing the homeland.
On Tuesday, January 28, Secretary Noem will address her staff for the first time and share her vision for the Department of Homeland Security.
Kristi Noem was confirmed by the U.S. Senate in a vote of 59-34 and sworn in as the Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security by U.S. Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas.
The United States Senate voted overwhelmingly to confirm Kristi Noem as the 8th Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security in a vote of 59- 34.
The Secretary of Homeland Security portraits are a tribute to the Secretaries' service to the Department and the nation, as well as part of the Department of Homeland Security’s legacy. Portraits are displayed at DHS Headquarters in Washington.
At Secretary Mayorkas’ direction, a cross-Departmental working group of senior officials conducted a comprehensive review of how to best prevent, detect, and respond to potential threats related to domestic violent extremism within DHS.
Kirstjen Michele Nielsen was sworn in on December 6, 2017 as the sixth Secretary of Homeland Security and served until April 10, 2019. She previously served as White House Deputy Chief of Staff. Secretary Nielsen joined the Trump administration in January 2017 as Chief of Staff to then-Secretary of Homeland Security, John Kelly. In that position, she was responsible for advising the Secretary on all operational, policy, and legal matters, including counterterrorism, cybersecurity, and border security.
Secretary John F. Kelly was born and raised in Boston, Massachusetts. He enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1970, and was discharged as a sergeant in 1972, after serving in an infantry company with the 2nd Marine Division, Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. Following graduation from the University of Massachusetts in 1976, he was commissioned an Officer of Marines.
Jeh Johnson was the Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security from December 23, 2013 to January 20, 2017.
